the books

Because their story is so compelling, renowned author Kimberly P. Johnson is writing a full-length book about their journey. One goal of the book, especially, is to introduce children to this little-known pivotal event that started in Rock Hill, SC but changed the course of Civil Rights history for the nation.

The book is titled “No Fear For Freedom:
The Story of the Friendship 9″

In 1961 in Rock Hill, South Carolina, a group of young men, demonstrated for freedom using a big message. This group of men, known as The Friendship 9, helped set the foundation for a movement in Civil Rights history. Their “Jail -No Bail” approach helped propel many Americans to equal justice. Their commitment to equality and freedom for all made them face not only adversity but also shame.

This young reader book will allow children to understand the complicated story of Civil Rights and freedom. The book is written in a way that not only appeals to the imaginations of children but allows them to learn important history facts and terms. Children’s author, Kimberly P. Johnson uses her poetic style to recapture this major event in South Carolina and Civil Rights history.
